Back Pain in PlanoFive simple techniques to avoid back and neck pain.

In today’s job market, a growing number of employment positions require hours-long stints in front of a screen. This position, without proper sitting posture, can quickly lead to soreness and inflammation in the neck, shoulders, back, and even wrists or hands.

The following are five points we suggest you consider each workday to help reduce pain:

1. Sit all the way back

To achieve proper sitting posture at the workstation, be sure to slide all the way back in the chair such that your back and spine are flush with the seatback. Avoid “perching” on the edge of the chair or leaning to one side or the other.

2. Consider computer ergonomics

Ergonomic desk equipment is more than just a fad – it is proven to reduce pain and inflammation for those who work on a laptop or PC most of the day. Be sure to invest in not only a quality ergonomic work chair but ergonomic keyboards and a mouse pad as well.

3. Be mindful of eye level

One of the most common causes of upper back and neck strain is linked to the position of the computer monitor. If you are looking downward all day, you can expect your neck muscles to feel strained after supporting the weight of your head for 8+ hours. To avoid this, adjust the monitor so it is directly in front of your eyes and does not require you to hold your head downward, upward or to either side.

4. Stand up

To the extent you are able, work on your computer in a standing position. This non-traditional computer posture can help keep the spine straight during the day, as well as increase blood flow to the lower extremities.

5. Develop stress reduction techniques

Work is a pain in the neck. Reducing soreness at the end of the day, however, comes from more than computer ergonomics and proper monitor height. Watching your stress levels – and developing healthy coping mechanisms – will go a long way in enhancing your overall health and reducing harmful toxins.
