The Benefits of Dry Needling

Written By ChiroConcepts of Plano West on July 27, 2018

Dry needling is a science-based therapy that targets myofascial trigger points in order to relieve pain, restore motion, and encourage healing.

In a dry-needling session, a hair-thin needle is inserted into trigger points to control pain and enhance function. This is not the same as acupuncture, which focuses on restoring energy flow through meridian points in the body.

Dry needling isn’t new. It’s been in use since the 1980s among physical therapists and has been gaining favor as a safe alternative to pain medications. And pain relief isn’t the only benefit to this modern approach to pain relief and healing.

Studies show that dry needling can even help improve depression, anxiety, and overall quality of life in patients who receive treatment for pain issues.

When Can Dry Needling Help You?

Dry needling has been used to treat sports injuries and myofascial pain syndromes, as well as various other injuries and conditions. A partial list includes:

  • Headaches/migraines
  • Shoulder pain
  • Whiplash and injuries stemming from it
  • Spinal problems
  • Neck pain
  • Rotator cuff issues

A dry needling session is typically pain-free, although the patient may feel a bit of cramping at the insertion point if the muscle is particularly tight. This is called the “twitch” effect. Trigger points may be sore for 24 to 48 hours after treatment, after which the patient should experience pain relief and improved range of motion.

Because dry needling is an in-office procedure that is minimally invasive, patients can return to daily activities immediately after treatment.

Depending on the severity of the ailment, anywhere from two to 12 treatments may be needed. However, some patients report significant relief after the first session.
